… IS A VIRUS: Ein Stück Code, mit dem niemand gerechnet hat. und mit dem wir nun alle leben müssen. In diesem Jahr geht die interdisziplinäre Workshop-Tagung für Kunst, Medien und Netzkultur interfiction viral. Notfalls auch in der Isolation.
VIREALITÄT
2020 findet interfiction erstmals nicht in Kassel statt. Sondern – ausschließlich – online. Für eine Workshop-Tagung, die ihr Jahresthema seit je aus der Netzkultur bezieht und für die digitale Medien und Netzwerke schon immer Gegenstand ebenso wie Bezugsrahmen sind, mag das nach einer Konzentration aufs „Kerngeschäft“ ausschauen. Nur, dass es hier nicht um wirtschaftliche Faktoren geht. Und zudem – im Grunde: allem voran – das Zusammenkommen vor Ort, das einen dichten Austausch ermöglicht, ebenso wie die Schnittstellen zum Film- und Videoprogramm, zur Ausstellung und vielen weiteren Elementen des Festivals bis dato für interfiction stets eine wichtige Rolle gespielt haben.
Zugleich hat interfiction mit seinem aktuellen Jahresthema – welches nicht das ursprünglich geplante ist – die Herausforderung ganz bewusst angenommen: gerade weil sich interfiction seit der Gründungsveranstaltung immer ein Thema wählt, das sich aus der Auseinandersetzung mit rezenten, gesellschaftlich relevanten Entwicklungen in der Medien- und Netzkultur heraus stellt. Darüber, dass diese in den vergangenen Monaten erstens denkbar massiv von einem Virus namens SARS-CoV-2 bestimmt gewesen sind und zweitens die Folgen der Pandemie auch neue ebenso wie bereits laufende und möglicherweise auch zuvor bereits ad acta gelegte Debatten um Digitalisierung, digitale Medien und Netzwerke entfacht und/oder (wieder-)belebt haben, besteht wohl kaum ein Zweifel.
Aber worum geht es dabei eigentlich? Welche Chancen, welche Risiken beinhalten die derzeitigen Entwicklungen? Können jene, die sich schon länger mit den nun wortwörtlich virulent gewordenen Fragen, Problemen und Perspektiven befassen, aus ihren Erfahrungs- und Wissenshorizonten etwas zu den Debatten beisteuern, das uns weiterbringt?
Verdanken sich die in Kultur und Künsten eben nicht erst seit gestern aufgerufenen Parallelen zwischen den Verhaltensweisen und Funktionen infektiöser organischer Strukturen, die wir Viren nennen, und den ebenso bezeichneten Schadprogrammen, lediglich der immer wieder aufscheinenden Biophilie unserer TechnoNaturKultur? Genauer gesagt: der menschlichen Neigung zur Metapher, zum Kommunizieren in und mit Bildern? Doch gerade wenn dem so sein sollte, bergen diese dann nicht auch ein Erkenntnispotential, das sich für den Umgang mit der aktuellen Lage und ihren Folgen nutzbar machen lässt?
Und, apropos Folgen: Lässt sich zum gegenwärtigen Zeitpunkt und vor diesem Horizont über jene Folgen produktiv spekulieren, welche die Pandemie für die aktuellen und künftigen Entwicklungen in Kunst, Medien- und Netzkultur hat, haben wird, haben könnte, haben sollte? Wie ist es unter den Vorzeichen des Virus um Utopien und Realitäten in diesem Feld bestellt? Über welche VIREALITÄT(EN) wollen wir nachdenken? Von, in und mit welchen VIREALITÄTEN wollen wir sprechen und handeln?
Mit diesen und weiteren Fragen rund um VIREALITÄT will sich Workshop-Tagung interfiction befassen.
interfiction findet 2020 in einem digitalen (Videokonferenz-)Format statt, das zugleich zu den Gegenständen der kritischen Auseinandersetzung zählt. Ob wir damit wirklich viral gehen oder ob wir vielleicht doch eher auf Anti-Viren-Ware setzen wollen wird aus nahe liegenden Gründen ebenfalls Thema sein…

… IS A VIRUS: A piece of code nobody has calculated on. Now we have to live with it. This year’s interfiction interdisciplinary workshop-conference for art, media and network cultures will go viral – and be it from isolation.
VIREALITY
In 2020, for the first time interfiction is not taking place in Kassel, but online. For a workshop-summit dedicated to and covering issues from the intersections of art, media and network cultures, the latter being both its focus and framework, this could look like a move towards core business. However, not only is the latter term rather misleading (interfiction is not about business, except for a certain interest in critical reflections of network economies). Moreover, if not most importantly: meeting at place for a dense and lively exchange, sitting together and spending time together has always been crucial for us. Just as the context of the festival itself, allowing us to create connections to the festival’s screening programs and exhibitions, and to strengthen the exchange and cooperation with others.
At the same time, with our decision for this year’s focus on VIREALITY (hereby postponing our original favorite to next year) we have deliberately taken up the challenge: from its early beginnings up till today interfiction has always made the choice for a “hot topic” from current developments in media and network cultures with a high impact on our society. There is probably no doubt that a virus called SARS-CoV-2 has been of considerably great influence on almost all what matters here – and that the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have not only fueled debates on digitalization, digital media and networks, but also soaked into the structures of social relationships and communication as well.
But what is it all about? What are the chances, what are the risks of the recent developments? What can those who have been dealing over decades with questions, problems and perspectives that now have become literally virulent contribute from their experience and knowledge to support a productive debate and to work towards solutions?
And what about the frequently invoked parallels between behavior patterns and functions of the infectious organic structures we call viruses and the likewise named computer malware code? If the latter are both prominent examples for our technonatureculture’s biophilia and the more general human affection for ‘metaphors to live by’, to communicate and think with/in images: do they also bear potentials for a deeper understanding of the situation we are currently dealing with?
If so, can we even dare to think further beyond this horizon, to proceed with productive speculations about possible futures for post-pandemic intersections and entanglements of art, media and network cultures? What does the virus, what does viral mean for its utopias and its realities? What is the VIREALITY, what are the VIREALITIES we want to dream, think, create and live with? Of, in and with what VIREALITY do we want to speak and act?
These are just some of the questions around VIREALTY this year’s edition of the interdisciplinary workshop-summit might deal with. While at the same time taking place in a digital (video conference) format that is itself a proper candidate for critical debates – as is digital virality anyway. Thus, should we really go viral? Or rather prefer not to – by creating our own anti-malware and/or other alternate strategies against pandemic socio-cultural threats.
